Erin Glenn Winery History:
1535 – Tim’s ancestors left Germany and went to the Bulgur region of Russia. They farmed and developed the land there for 75 years and it was free land. The Catholics during that time were being persecuted which led to the Bolshevik revolution. Tim’s grandparents escaped and went back to Germany. One of the aunts married into an Italian family, where the juxtaposition of sauerkraut with sausage and wine made every weekend, were at odds.
Tim grew up one block from the Catholic Church – the wines were label-less.
Tim made wine with his Aunt. In the 80’s, they planted Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir at 1500’ of elevation.
Tantrum is planted at 1200’ of elevation. The Pinot Noir comes from Bolton Cellars, the Merlot from Hillside and the Barbara varies on its origin from year to year.
Erin Glenn came from Erin’s side, (her name obviously) and her Irish heritage. The Celtic knot that adorns the bottle was a design rendered from Margaret McDonald Macintosh, a famous Scottish Celtic knot maker.
The Velvet Ass Rose may be derived from a woman was a famous Madame in San Francisco, named Rosanna Hughes Keenan, who with her entourage of seven ladies drowned in route to Vancouver B.C. A boat named the “Brother Jonathon” sank in 1933, carrying with it one additional passenger, an engineer, that was commissioned to restore the Mint that the Erin Glenn winery is currently housed in. There was little or no paper money in the 1930s, people had converted their fortunes into gold bars that also surreptitiously, sank.
